One of the landmark works of Philippine cinema, Insiang made history as the first Philippine film to screen at the Cannes Film Festival.
Set in the crowded neighborhoods of Manila, the film follows Insiang, a young woman living with her mother whose younger lover brings growing tension into their already difficult home. Featuring a remarkable performance by Hilda Koronel, director Lino Brocka creates a powerful portrait of family conflict, poverty, power, and survival.
Intimate yet unflinching, Insiang helped bring Philippine cinema to international attention and remains one of Brocka’s defining works.
