The Best of British Theatre Broadcast Live to Cinemas Around the World
“I grew up in Manchester in the 60s. If I had been able to see Olivier’s National Theatre at my local cinema, I would have gone all of the time.” – Nicholas Hytner, director of the Royal National Theatre.
Cinestudio presents National Theater Live, a program of The Royal National Theatre in London, which broadcasts live, High Definition performances via satellite of their new stage productions to over 300 cinemas and art centers around the world. The performances are broadcast live on Thursday afternoons on the US east coast, but are often screened more conveniently on Sunday matinees at Cinestudio, to allow the largest audience to be able to experience the best of British theater.
The dream of National Theater Live is to offer both classic and new plays that represent the innovative work being done on the London stage, to both local British audiences who don’t traditionally go to the theatre, and to international audiences who are too far removed. Their experiment has been a roaring success. The program began in June 2009 with Racine’s Phèdre, starring Helen Mirren. Cinestudio began presenting NT Live in the winter of 2012, made possible by the recent installation of our top-of-the-line Ultra-High Definition Digital Cinema projection system.
