This engaging biopic is an intimate portrait of the celebrated and often shocking photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, whose relationship with Patti Smith and other icons of 1970s New York City influenced his work as he explored his emerging sexuality. Mapplethorpe wanted mainstream recognition, but was best known for his photographs of artists, musicians, socialites, film stars, and members of the S&M underground that displayed eroticism in a way that had never before been displayed publicly. A nuanced portrait of an artist at the height of his craft, who battled self-destructive impulses that threaten to undermine it all. Starring gay fave Matt Smith in the title role.
