Framing Agnes

In 1958, a young trans woman named Agnes participated in a gender study at UCLA in return for access to the gender-affirming care she needed. More than sixty years later, director Chase Joynt employs re-enactment and creative genre-blurring storytelling techniques to breathe new life into Agnes and other previously unknown people who redefined gender in the midcentury. Using actual case studies from the era as rich source material, Joynt and a talented cast of trans actors blend fiction and nonfiction to explore a fascinating period in LGBTQ history.
