In post-war Germany, liberation by the Allies did not mean freedom for everyone. Hans is a gay Jew who is imprisoned shortly after being released from a concentration camp. Over decades, he is spied on and imprisoned repeatedly under Paragraph 175, a 19th century law criminalizing homosexuality. In prison, Hans befriends Viktor, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, and over time their relationship blossoms into something tender.
