In Winter’s Bone director Debra Granik introduced Jennifer Lawrence in a powerful story about outsiders in the drug-drenched Missouri Ozarks. In her new film, Granik once again strikes gold, with an amazing performance by New Zealander Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie. As the film opens, Tom and her father Will, a veteran with PTSD, are living off the grid in the Pacific Northwest. Enter social services, who try to re-introduce the pair to society. Tom is torn between loyalty to her father, and a growing belief that the outside world is not as scary as she’s been taught.
“Encourages us to see the beauty – and meaning – in the everyday: the velvety moss on a tree, the opalescent shimmer of a spider web and the tenderness that envelops Will and Tom.” – Manohla Dargis, New York Times (Critics pick).
