Animation legend Glen Keane used 2-D pencil-drawn gures to capture the amazing moves of basketball superstar Kobe Bryant in Dear Basketball. Inspired by a poem by Ron Koertge about a boy’s attempts to please his dad, Negative Space uses stop-motion photography of puppets that mimics the characters’ awkward interactions. Lou is the first short directed by longtime Pixar animator Dave Mullins (Finding Nemo, Up!) and he clearly has fun with a creature made up of everything – from baseballs to hoodies – left behind in a school’s lost and found box. Garden Party, the work of six French students, is computer-generated animation with a twist, as hyperreal frogs move in a world created by a 3-D scanner. Revolting Rhymes also uses 3D CG, but to create puppets moving through a stylized stage set, creating the perfect mashup of twisted nursery rhymes written by Roald Dahl.
