Anyone looking for the genesis of this country’s violent history need look no further than the treatment of Native Americans by European settlers. Elegantly filmed in wide screen photography that captures the epic beauty of the West, Hostiles follows an Indian-hating Cavalry captain (Christian Bale) and a woman whose pioneering family was killed by the Comanche (Rosamund Pike). Their job is to escort a dying former prisoner Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi) and his family, on his final journey back home to Montana. Over the course of the journey, Bale begins to see the Cheyenne as individuals: but can a birthright of bigotry be overcome in a single lifetime?
“Powered by a dynamic trio of performances by Christian Bale, Wes Studi and Rosamund Pike, “Hostiles” creates a force field of emotion from start to finish that is as enveloping as anyone could wish for.” Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times.
