Faro, the remote and isolated island where Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman lived and created some of his greatest films, has always had a mystical pull on anyone who loves cinema. That is certainly the case for an American filmmaking couple who spend the summer on Faro, hoping for the spark that inspired Bergman’s Persona, (the original) Scenes From a Marriage and more. Tony (Tim Roth) and Chris (Vicky Krieps) also hope that their pilgrimage will bring new intimacy to their marriage. But as they spend more time apart, Chris dreams up a film set on Faro, where a young woman returns home and falls madly in love with her high school sweetheart (Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie). The stories converge in a stunning exploration of what it means to be both a woman and an artist.
“a delicate, haunting Russian doll of a movie, set on the lush little wonderland of Faro.” – Rachel Handler, New York magazine. NYT Critic’s Pick
