It’s not easy going up against Judy Garland or Barbra Streisand in their outstanding versions of A Star Is Born. But we’re happy to relate that Lady Gaga rises to the challenge: she’s got a soaring voice, acting chops, diva fabulousness and scrappy authenticity. The story works like a charm: a hard-drinking rock and roller (Cooper, who also directed) who is burnt out on his own legend, discovers a genuine talent (Gaga) in the rough. As they fall in love, she gains confidence – but he has little respect for the pop music arena where she flies.
