“Just because I’m cheeky doesn’t mean I’m not serious.” Now 80, one of the greats of British modern painting still finds much to explore with his Fauvist, colorful paintings of the world and the people who inhabit it. Exhibition features works from two shows at London’s Royal Academy: A Bigger Picture (2012), and 82 Portraits and 1 Still-Life (2016), which features 82 portraits of people that Hockney met in Los Angeles, all painted sitting in the same chair and in front of the same blue background. Mixed in with the vivid paintings are interviews with Hockney, commentary by the Guardian’s art critic Jonathan Jones, and trips from California to New York to Yorkshire, where Hockney rediscovered a love for his childhood landscapes in old age. 85 min
