Hereditary scared the pants off the audience in the Sundance Film Festival’s special Midnight Screenings. But that was Utah, and Hartford audiences are made of stronger stuff! A psychological horror film with family ghosts as stand-ins for the damage have passed on, Hereditary is set in a cozy-until-spooky Alpine-framed home in the Pacific Northwest. Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine, United States of Tara) is extraordinary as a woman whose mother has just died, shaking up life with her scowling husband (Gabriel Byrne), cute stoner son (Alex Wolff) and quirky daughter (Milly Shapiro). But maybe quirky isn’t the right word for a girl who can see spirits the rest of us only dream about. NYT Critic’s Pick
“Hereditary may be the most exciting movie I’ve seen at Sundance this year. Collette’s performance is staggering.” Owen Glieberman, Variety.
