MARX CAN WAIT
Director: Marco Bellocchio
2021, Italy, 96min., NR
Language: Italian
With Pockets In their Fists in 1965, Marco Bellochio began a nearly 60 year career as an extraordinary director, writer and actor. While most of his films are fictional features exploring Italy’s politics, changing values, and relationship with the Catholic Church, Marx Can Wait is unique: it is both a documentary and his most personal work. The director brings together his remaining five siblings, now in their 80s, for a reunion that is also an attempt to understand why their brother Camillo committed suicide at age 29.
“What makes this film tender as well as tragic is how that loss also makes the family blossom before our eyes.” – A.O. Scott, New York Times.
