Starr Carter is a brainy teenager who very carfeully walks the tightrope of living in two worlds: the affluent majority private white school where she tones down her black culture to fit in; and her mostly-African American neighborhood, where her loving father schools her on the Black Panthers (but doesn’t know about her white boyfriend). When an unarmed black friend is killed by the police, Starr becomes an activist, looking squarely at the deep divisions that (still) keep her worlds separate.
