Martin McDonagh is best known for his four Tony-nominated plays set in Ireland (including The Beauty Queen of Leenane), and his Oscar® nominated film In Bruges. His third film may be the first to take home a ‘win,’ with its edgy humor and dizzying dialogue given a beating heart by the devastating Frances McDormand. The star of Fargo and HBO’s Olive Kitteridge plays a woman whose daughter was murdered, with no leads from the police. In a bold act of defiance, she paints three billboards insulting the police (in particular, an ailing chief played by Woody Harrelson). The billboards set off a whirling firestorm of reaction throughout the town, from the innocent and guilty alike. “McDonagh leans hard on the scorched-earth aspects of McDormand’s appeal and gives her what may turn out to be her signature role… both morally grounded and mad as hell.” – Ty Burr, Boston Globe. 112 min
