(US, 2017) Director: James Franco. Screenplay: Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, based on the movie The Room, and the book The Disaster Artist by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell. No surprise if you haven’t seen The Room, a truly terrible movie that Variety commented ‘prompts most of its viewers to ask for their money back — before 30 minutes have passed.’ But some intellectually curious viewers – like James Franco – asked themselves: WTF? And just who was the deluded writer/actor/star? Franco’s curiosity paid off, as he perfectly inhabits the body, odd accent, and odder-still arrogance of the man behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau. And while Franco starts out laughing at Wiseau’s L.A. love triangle with little plot, no technique, and egregious acting; he ends up making us care about an artist’s dreams, no matter how offbeat. 103 min

“In the end, The Disaster Artist decides that the only bad movies are the ones that fail to bring us joy.” – Rafael Guzman, Newsday.
